The straightedge method is used when you do not have a lensatic compass available. The steps are similar to the compass method, minus the use of magnetic azimuths.

Step 7: Determine 6-Digit Grid Coordinate

Determine the 6-digit grid coordinate using your protractor.

Step 6: Intersecting Lines

Where the two lines intersect (C) is the location of the unknown point.

Step 5: Draw a Straight Line from 2nd position to the Unknown Point

Step 4: Move to a Second Location

Move to another recognizable position (B) on the ground and orient your map.

Step 3: Draw a Straight Line from Your Location to the Unknown Point Using a straightedge, align the straightedge with your point on the map and the unknown point on the ground. Draw a line on the map along the aligned straightedge.

Step 2: Locate and Mark Your Position on the Map

Locate and mark your position (A) on the map.
